The Fruit Machine

“Today we acknowledge an often-overlooked part of Canada’s history. Canada’s role in the systemic oppression, criminalization, and violence against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and two-spirit communities.” – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

LGBTQ2S Canadians received an historic apology from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on November 28, 2017, but what is the true depth of the actions for which he was apologizing? Survivors of the four decades-long homosexual witch hunt recount their personal stories of betrayal at the hands of the Canadian government. At times sharp and funny, more often heart-wrenching, The Fruit Machine reveals sobering details of our national history that must not be forgotten. Director Sarah Fodey has worked on film and digital storytelling for over twenty years. The Fruit Machine is her first feature-length documentary.

The Fruit Machine is preceded by the short film Button Out!—a lively homage to the one-inch button.

This film is unrated.
