Saturday Church tells the story of fourteen-year-old Ulysses, an introspective and creative teen who finds himself thrust into heightened responsibility when his father dies in combat overseas. His heartbroken single mother Amara (Margot Bingham) leaves Ulysses and his younger brother in the care of their judgmental Aunt Rose (Regina Taylor). To survive, Ulysses imagines that life is a musical—the film breaks out into dreamy, dynamic song and dance numbers with stellar performances by the young cast.
With the tension in his house building, Ulysses is driven out of his home, finding his way to the Christopher Street Piers where he meets a group of queer and trans youth who introduce him to the drop-in centre known as Saturday Church. Ulysses faces heartbreaking challenges but in this new world, with this new group of friends, he finds ways to stand gloriously in his self-determination.
Saturday Church features a charming cameo from Kate Bornstein as well as Indya Moore and Mj Rodriguez in strong supporting roles.
This film is rated PG.
