Desi Queer

This beautiful collection of short films captures the complexities of queer South Asian experiences across borders and identities. In Home Girl, a closeted woman comes to terms with all the things left unsaid in the wake of her mother’s death. In The Last Letter, devoted father Mohan reminisces about a long ago love affair, and wonders whether he should come out to his wife and daughter. Documentary Pahichan shines a light on nineteen year old Nepalese trans woman Rukshana Kapali as she fights for herself and her community to have equal access to post secondary education. Please Mind The Gap follows transman Anshuman as he navigates the gendered space of the Dehli Metro. In Canada, teenage Priya struggles to please her overbearing, traditional mother and be honest about her relationship with her girlfriend. And single mother Usha finds herself drawn to the local primary school teacher in her rural Indian village, awakening feelings she never thought were possible in U for Usha. Family, tradition and large and small acts of resistance are all themes in these thoughtful portrayals of brown queer lives.
