Festival year: 2017
This documentary captures the spirit and life story of local trans elder and poet Antonette Rea—in all of its humour, pain, and passion. Antonette culminates in the production of Miss Understood, the interdisciplinary performance showcased at PuSh Festival last year based on Rea’s poetry. At times harrowing, but ultimately hopeful, directors Darren Heroux and Ian Barbour deliver a moving tribute to a significant community figure and the healing power of writing. Rea has been performing spoken word since 2008, and is a member of the Thursdays Writing Collective in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
